Welcome to the first Nordic symposium and workshop in Paperclay!

Art/works 2007 - Paperclay
Nordic Ceramics Symposium
23 - 26 July 2007
Mandal in Norway

“art/works”, a Nordic Ceramics Symposium and Workshop, is arranged for the first time this summer, in the period 23rd - 26th July in Mandal, Norway. Ceramists, potters and sculptors from all over the world are invited to participate.

The topic for this years event is Paperclay, a combination of paper and clay which brings new possibilities to potters, sculptors and other ceramists, combining higher green strength with possibilities to combine wet and dry materials and lighter weight in the fired pieces. The use of Paperclay is rapidly spreading, and i.e. in Western Australia, a third of all clay used is now Paperclay.
In the Nordic countries, Paperclay is not widely used, which is something we attempt to change with this symposium.

The symposium is held at Kulturfabrikken, a former furniture factory, which the last year has been transformed into an Art Factory.

The symposium will consist of both theory and practice, with lectures, individual tuition, preparation of Paperclay and working with Paperclay individually, in groups and together in a common building and firing of a large structure.

Lecturing and tuition is by Dr. Kim Jeoung-Ah (S), Leena Juvonen (SF), Astrid Heimer (N) and Malene Pedersen (DK), four of the forerunners in use of Paperclay from Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden, which will demonstrate the benefits of Paperclay compared to ordinary clay.
