Welcome to art/works - the first Nordic Ceramic Symposium and Workshop in Mandal, Norway - 23 - 26 July 2007

We are proud to announce that art/works actually is taking place this year, only six months after the planning of the symposium started.

The topic for this years event is
Paperclay, a combination of paper and clay which brings new possibilities to potters, sculptors and other ceramists, combining higher green strength with possibilities to combine wet and dry materials and lighter weight in the fired pieces. The use of Paperclay is rapidly spreading, and i.e. in Western Australia, a third of all clay used is now Paperclay.
In the Nordic countries, Paperclay is not widely used, which is something we attempt to change with this symposium.

We have gathered four of the forerunners in use of Paperclay from Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden (see
Tutors), which in lectures and in tuition will demonstrate the benefits of Paperclay compared to ordinary clay.
The specific program will be announced later this summer.

We invite you to four days of theory and practice on Paperclay. The symposium is held at Kulturfabrikken, a former furniture factory which the last year has been transformed into a Art Factory with studios for artists, a cafe and a large grounds. We will put up a large tent on the grounds, where the practice will take place, while the theory will take place inside in the cafe. The practice will include production of you own paperclay in different ways and with different measures, and working with clay individually and in groups.

In addition to the learning process, we want to focus on the creative and artistic process, where we challenge the possibilites in Paperclay by a common building and firing of a large structure.

Price
We want the symposium to be economically affordable for artists, ceramic teachers, students, designers in ceramic factories, etc, and has set the price as low as €245. The price includes the lectures and the tuition, a plaster slab for drying Paperclay which is made during the symposium, and 10 kg of clay or Paperclay, depending on wether one wants to work with commercial Paperclay or Paperclay prepared at the symposium.

The price doesn't include meals and accommodation.
